Clara Barton

  • Clara Barton was born December 25, 1821, In North Oxford, Massachusetts.
  • Clara was very shy as a child and so she only had one friend in school
  • At 10 her brother David fell off the roof, Clara learned to give prescribed medicine and place leeches on people
  • Clara became a school teacher at 17, spearheading a campaign to give children of workers to receive education
  • Clara received recognition for delivering lecture on her experiences during the war. During a trip to Geneva, she met the Red Cross and a doctor who would later help her find funding for an American Branch of the Red Cross. upon returning to the States she talked at length with President Rutherford Hayes and the idea was rejected, a new president was elected; Chester Arthur. he accepted the proposal on the grounds they would also respond to natural disasters as well as war.
